I think iron bars would probably work - I don't see it as being too common. It's annoying enough to find on your own that it's worth trading other goods for, too, so that inherent value would be nice. Gold is pretty much totally useless in this game anyways.

Precisely why gold is perfect to use as currency - if everyone applies a perceived value to it, that is, just like how coinage has worked for millennia.

Except if you have something of inherent worth it will work just as well or even better, because you have a drain on the economy as the iron is used up, meaning there's not likely to be huge inflation - which happens in pretty much every game. Especially one with infinite worldspace and resources.

Diamonds would probably be better, since they also have high value for tools, but they're too rare for currency. Thus, iron is probably the best bet. I don't know about you guys, but a stack of 64 iron ingots would be pretty damn valuable to me ingame.

Since most of this forum has Minecraft, we're likely going to play SMP together.

In this case, we should discuss rates and the worth of iron bars.
I'm not sure where to start. Four bookcases for an iron piece? Two?

I guess I'll see you all on some shitty map like actual_tetris sometime.

I propose we form a dictatorship and a central bank where all the iron must be deposited and used in communal buildings. All transactions must take place at the Bank Office under the supervision of the Bank Manager. Private trading is illegal, those who are caught are thrown down an abandoned mineshaft.

It's pretty useless to discuss it. I imagine it'll fluctuate and be based on what you happen to need at the moment. It's likely to be closer to bartering than an established currency, which is the only realistic option anyways.

I guess we will wait and see.

I originally wrote a sentence about me being worried about kiwi destroying everything, but then I realized that we get swords to kill kiwi. SMP will be great.

I propose storing ore in the Central Mining Authority (CMA) to be compulsory and using it comes with a tax. This tax will be used for.....things.

Direct trade of goods will work fine. There's no reason to have a concept of "money" when you can carry huge amounts of goods everywhere you go. Only if Notch implements money as something not stored in your inventory, but in a separate counter, does it become of use. Why carry 64 gold bars when you can just as easily carry 64 iron bars that your trade partner can actually do stuff with?

The value of things will be determined by plain old supply and demand. You could set a price of 3 iron bars for a bookcase now, but then I join the server and make 450 bookcases and give them away for free just to annoy you. Where is your planned economy now, Charles? I killed it. I killed it with bookcases. Bookcases everywhere.

Still no papyrus, but I found some clay...

EDIT: I got stuck outside at night as my search for papyrus has consumed me and ZOMBIES, ZOMBIES EVERYWHERE

I found 10 pieces in my travels and came back and in one night had over a stack not counting all the new ones I planted. That stuff grows so fast.

A stack of bamboo is only 7 bookcases, not counting the wood that's needed.

Are you sure it's not bamboo, because that picture shows some papyrus.

It does look a lot like bamboo, and it grows like bamboo too, which is to say really fast.
